GENERATIONS GAP WORKING TOGETHER Successful medical field in America gives Americans' longer and healthier lives. Thus, now, in an enterprise, we usually have 3 or 4 generations working together. They are: 1. Traditionalist born before 1946 (62 years or older) The traditionalist went through economically hardship and believed
in saving for rainy days. There are not many traditionalists left in
the workforce. The company is their life and loyalty is an important
moral. They are not easily adapted to change. Traditionalists wanted
their children to have the best, as a result, the "me" generation
arrived. |

One
More Stroke
Summer 2008 has almost ended
taking the heated sun away from Southern California. The announcer called for event #7, girls, six-year old, 25 yard, backstroke. Little girls jumped in the pool, hanged on the wall, and prepared for their positions. These kids struggled with their backstroke event; they slithered like little snakes in the river. But, none of them gave up. They reached the end of the pool holding backstroke all the way. Next event, 25 yard, breaststroke. The young athletes hurried to take their positions on the diving board. "Whistle blow; on your mark; go!" They transformed into little dolphins diving off the board into the swimming pool, spreading their feet, stroking their arms, and finally reaching the wall with big smiles on their faces. Ignoring the referees who had clocked their times and records, climbing up the swimming pool, they ran straight to their parents with cheering, jumping, hugging, and high fives. To these young athletes, it was not about whose touched the wall first, but it was all about the joy that they were able to reach the finish line. One even said, "I had zero energy left in my body." But, when the announcer called for event #32, girls, six-year old, 50 yard, free-style, again, they were hurried to take their positions on the diving board with 100% of their energy recharged within 30 minutes. Once again, these young athletes performed their best in the swimming pool, finishing their race with prides. Have anyone seen a group of 6 years old kids on butterfly stroke race? They did not have the muscles to swing their arms high up in the air; nevertheless, they could hold their breath extremely long and kicked their feet up and down. It was fascinating watching them just like you were watching a group of little mermaid playing under the water. Once, climbing out of the pool, they stood by the pool and cheered for their teammates. They were anxiously waiting for their next events in the pool. All day, the kids continued with their individual and relay events. At the end of the day, a ceremony was held honoring their accomplishments in 2008 Summer Swim Team. These young athletes were thrilled to receive medals and among them were my twin daughters. They brought their ribbons to us and said, "Mom, Dad, look, we got ribbons and so are my friends (Big smile)!" The 2008 Summer Swim Team has concluded. These energetic athletes were happy to receive ribbons for their hard works through out summer. To them, it was not how many medals they received; or what color of the medals they received; it was the accomplishment because they finished their races with prides, especially, they did not give up any event. This is sportsmanship spirit and marked an end to summer 2008.

2007
This year, we introduce a new tradition to our daughters, recapturing the year in your eyes. We would like our daughters keeping their good memories through out their growing stage in life. Since they are only 5 years old, I typed out their words, their thoughts, and edited a little bit here and there. I tried my best to typing out the exact words or phases spoken by them. Sydney and Celine freely expressed themselves through words. Together, we finished a memory page for Sydney and another page for Celine. We had so much fun talking about things that had happened in 2007. It was amazing to hear our daughters told us what were the most memorable moments in 2007. We attached their 2007 memories in our Christmas card sending to our family and friends and wish them Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Chinese
New Year in The Eyes of The Children One
evening, after dinner, we gathered around and looked at pictures of
our last Chinese New Year eve dinner.
Sydney asked, "Why so many dishes on the table? Shrimps, fish, sausages, and vegetables?"
Celine asked, "What is that funny food? It has holes (lotus
root)"? How shall I explain the " New
Year Eve festive dinner menu" mythology to my curious daughters?
SHRIMPSo,
I asked Sydney to say the word shrimp in Cantonese. Quickly, she replied "虾". Then, I asked her to laugh out loud.
She opened her mouth widely, "Ha Ha Ha".
That was why we eat shrimp because it represents happiness. Celine giggled…. FISH"I
love "魚" with soy sauce", Sydney said. Celine jumped in and said, "It's my
favorite food too". In
Chinese pronunciation, fish meant lots of money to keep ("餘"). "Can I feed my piggy bank" Celine
asked? Sure, you will
receive red envelopes and feed your piggy.
"Me too", Sydney added. SAUSAGE"I
love 腊肠", Celine shouted out.
"Uhm…. Tasty", Sydney looked at the picture and smiled. Sausages resample eternity ("长久")
meaning that we are going to be together. LOTUS ROOT
Celine
said, "Mom, this is a funny looking vegetable!". Sydney laughed and made her statement,
"I don't want to eat this!".
Well, this is very good to eat.
You have been eating this when Mom made soup, but I cut into
small pieces and you did not recognize them.
Eating lotus roots (莲 藕) meant no obstacles with works and
everything else for the entire year (萬 事
通). Oh… (from the children). "Obstacles? What does it mean Mom?",
asked Sydney. It meant
everything will go our ways, no blockages.
"Like a wall 姐 姐, so you don't bump into it again!",
Celine explained. DRIED BLACK MOSS
"Eh…..What
is that? It looks like our hairs", shouted Sydney and Celine. This is a kind of seaweed. We ate them because the pronunciation in
Chinese of this vegetable is "发菜" which meant lots of money. [puzzle faces…..clueless with the word
发菜] The
rest of the evening, we continued our conversation about foods for
Chinese New Year, dragon dance, and new clothes.
They jumped around the house put on color bed sheet and played
dragon dance. We sure
enjoyed our culture night with our lovely daughters. May
you have a festive Chinese New Eve dinner with family and friends! 乾杯! By

Angle and Princess, time to go to sleep. Mommy, could you tell us a bedtime story, please. Alright, tonight, mommy will tell you special story…. Once upon a time, it was the night before Christmas. Everyone is sounded
asleep. The night was peak dark and it is only shined by moonlight.
Ho! Ho! Ho! A shadow of a sled, reindeers, and an old man appeared from
a distance. He circled and circled
his sled around the sky, but could not find any houses with chimneys
to land. That was odds? Rounds and rounds he went. Finally, he landed
his sled on soft sand. Since there were no chimneys to climb, he decided
to tip toe into this unusual house. In this house, there were no lights,
no decors, and no Christmas tree. On their walls, there were kids' color
pictures. Many letters placed on empty canvas beds. He saw neither milk
nor cookies. Where was everyone at this hour? Weren't they supposed
to sleep so I could put down presents? What a strange house this could
be? Oh! He realized; Rudolph has guided his sled a desert. He has landed
his sled in desert sand and entered a house of the soldiers. He checked
his list twice; there are no wishes and no letters from the soldiers.
What should he do? Then, he opened his bag, pulled out letters and coloring
pictures with loves from far lands; put them on their canvas beds. On
a piece of paper, he wrote: Love, Hopped onto his sled, Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas to all! Good night! Angle; Good night ! Princess; sweet dream! Merry Christmas! To our service men and women |

我的爸爸 潘翠膺 |
||

Today is one of the first Father's
Days of our new millennium. Fathers of 1900 didn't
have it nearly as good as fathers of today; but they did have a few advantages:

我 "have a nice day at work, mom". 我說 " Have a nice day staying home". Thank you for letting me be a mother'.

KHAI
MINH'S MEMORIES |
|||
I only lived in Nha Trang when I was a baby. By 4 years old, I moved to Saigon and attended Catholic French School until I was 6 years old. At that time, I spoke and wrote French and Vietnamese fluently. I spoke fluently in Chinese, yet I cannot read or write Chinese. 1971, a year to remember, my dad came to Saigon and brought me back to Nha Trang with him. He said "you are a Chinese, you have to learn how read and write in Chinese". In this little town, I attended my 1st Chinese School, Khai Minh. Because I did not know how to read or write Chinese, I started at Kindergarten. The first day of school, my dad reminded me that "Pan Cui Ying" is my name in school, should not wait for the "Phan Suy Ung", because this is a Chinese school. The first day of school was awkward. I attended the same class with my younger sister. Other students asked her who I was. My little sister said: "She is my sister who came from suburban (chi toi o nha que moi len)". I did not know how to write in calligraphy. I started learning how to write my Chinese name. At that time, I hated my name so much because it has too many strokes. Can you tell?潘翠膺. After a week in Kindergarten, I learned how to write Chinese and made many friends. [Yet! I still keep in touch with my kindergarten friends now!]. Afterward, going to school was fun. I was nominated to be the Captain 班長 of class 1C (Homeroom teach 班主任? I forgot), then 2C (Homeroom teacher: Luu My An 劉美安老師), and 3B (Homeroom teacher: Han Hong 韓紅老師). I remembered that students had to take turn to do classroom cleaning daily. One day, it was my group (4 girls) turn to do clean the classroom. As usually, we did not clean the class immediately. We played games, talking until we heard voices. We thought that there were ghosts, and we ran all the way down to first floor. We then found out that the guys in our class stayed over and hided behind the bungalow to scare the girls. No wonder the old saying "1st demon, 2nd ghost, then 3rd student" (Nhat quy, nhi ma, thu ba hoc tro). Annually, Khai Minh has a tradition voting Student Role Model 模範生 (hoc sinh guong mau) of each class. Fortunately, I was nominated and won the election every year from 1C, 2C, and 3B. The most memory election would be in class 3B. At election date, each student wrote one nominated name in a piece of paper and placed in a box. Then, the teacher will draw the paper out of the box and read of the name. A student will stand by the blackboard and start writing the word 正 because it has 5 strokes. Once, the word is completed, it is counted as 5 votes. My name was called so many times and it appeared that all the guys in the class voted for me. Why? (Sorry! I don't have an answer). The last time I attended Khai Minh was in April 1975. I left Khai Minh and studied in Saigon since April 1975. My years with Khai Minh were very short (3 ? years), but my memories with Khai Minh are eternity.
